Leopard Athletics, SAAC Volunteer At Special Olympics

The commitment and involvement of University of La Verne Athletics within the community continued recently with the Special Olympics at the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley Regional Games on Saturday, April 28 on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona.

More than 30 La Verne student-athletes, through the efforts of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), representing nearly each of the Leopard sports were on hand as volunteers for the day.  The event featured approximately 80 Special Olympians.

“It was amazing to see such a diverse group of student-athletes take the time out of their busy schedules to volunteer and make a difference in people’s lives,” said Leopard tennis coach and SAAC advisor Yolanda Duron.  “Each La Verne student-athlete contributed to a successful event at Special Olympics."

Leopard volunteers were involved in numerous activities on the day, including assisting in Bocce ball and track events and helping with distribution of medals.  Additionally the volunteers manned Tent City (snacks and games) and contributed with lunch and the opening ceremonies.

Most importantly, the Leopard volunteers witnessed the strength and commitment of the participating athletes and shared in their competitive excellence.  “The energy we shared helped each athlete be their best,” Duron added.  “Each athlete reminded us the true value of sportsmanship and friendship.”
