La Verne Secures Road Triumph At Caltech

The University of La Verne snapped a three-game losing streak by earning a comfortable 73-47 triumph over the California Institute of Technology in SCIAC action Wednesday in Pasadena.

Billy Nicolini and Jonathan Bastos scored 11 points each as the Leopards improved to 2-4 in conference play and 6-11 overall.  Caltech dropped to 0-6 and 0-17, respectively.

La Verne never trailed in the game and raced out to a 40-14 halftime advantage on the Beavers in shooting 52% (13-25) from the field while holding the home team to just three field goals prior to intermission.  The Leos grabbed their largest lead of 28 points at 60-32 on a Matt Heyd layup with 9:32 remaining in regulation.

For the game, the Leopards shot 43.6% (24-55) compared to 29.5% (13-44) for the Beavers.

La Verne finished with a 43-32 edge over the Beavers while also forcing 17 turnovers.  The Leopards also shot 8-18 (44%) from three-point range.

Heyd and Trevor Woodland posted 9 points each for La Verne while teammate Mychal Thomas tallied 8 points and 8 rebounds in 21 minutes.

La Verne will resume league action as it takes on Redlands on Saturday in the second game of a SCIAC men's-women's basketball doubleheader at Currier Gym.  Tip off is 7:30 pm.
