La Verne Finishes 14th At NCAA Golf Championships
The University of La Verne golf team finished 14th in the 2012 NCAA Division III Golf Tournament at the Mission Inn Resort & Club at Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
After a final round of 312 (+24), La Verne ended at 1212 (+60) for the tournament. The national champion and wire-to-wire leader was Oglethorpe with a total of 1171, finishing 20 strokes better than second place Transyvania at 1191 and third place Methodist at 1192.
La Verne junior Derek Zachman concluded the tournament by tying for seventh among individuals with a 294 total [76-69-71-78] after shooting 78 on Friday on the Par 72, 6926-yard El Campeon Course to secure a Top 10 finish.
Leopard freshman Trent Twamley also shot 78 for his final round and ended the tournament with a total of 299 (75-71-75-78) to finish in a tie for 22nd overall. Fellow frosh Kelby Scharmann enjoyed the low round among the Leopards on Friday with a 76 to finish with a total of 308 (77-74-81-76), good for 54th overall.
Senior Nick Ericson shot 81 on the final round and ended the tournament tied for 70th with a total of 316 (80-80-75-81). Freshman Andre Bedard shot 80 and concluded with a total of 319 (82-79-78-80) to tie for 76th.
The individual national champion was Oglethorpe's Anthony Maccaglio with a score of 6-under par 282 after shooting a 75 on the final day. Hayden Jones of Oglethorpe placed second at even par 288 and Jeremy Sanders of Redlands joined Illinois Wesleyan's Dex Reese in a tie for third with a 290 total.
A total of 41 teams and 209 players were competing in the championships at the start of the tournament.
