La Verne Shuts Out Visiting Kingsmen
The University of La Verne men’s soccer team held the visiting Cal Lutheran Kingsmen scoreless in a 3-0 shutout victory in SCIAC action Saturday at Ben Hines Field.
The Leopards got on the board quickly with an unassisted goal by Mike Mancilla in the fifth minute of the game. Shortly after, La Verne would be awarded a corner kick. Thanks to cross into the box by Jonathon Cabrera, Taylor Hart was able to score a Leopard goal to open a 2-0 lead that they would take into halftime.
Physical play increased going into half time with a total of 17 fouls and both teams receiving a yellow card.The aggressiveness continued from both teams in the second half, with 10 more fouls called and La Verne receiving 3 more yellow cards.
Re-entering in the game in the middle of the second half, Nahavi Mendoza came out firing with three shots on goal. With an assist by Donn Capps, Mendoza was able to get his fourth shot in the net to give the Leos a 3-0 victory over the Kingsmen. The score held as La Verne recorded its first shutout at home this season.
With the win La Verne improves its conference record to 2-2, and will face the visiting Stags from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday at Ben Hines Field. The match will begin at 4:00pm.
