Leopards Shut Out Visiting Tigers
The University of La Verne men's soccer team held the Occidental
College Tigers scoreless in a 4-0 victory in SCIAC action Wednesday
at Ben Hines Field.
La Verne's Taylor Hart scored his third goal this season in the 15th minute of the game off a pass by Mike Mancilla for a 1-0 advantage over the Tigers. The Leopards' second goal came from an unassisted shot by Abdullah Alharshan, his first of the season. Occidental would receive two yellow cards by Ben Murray and goalie, Ian Powell and would be unable to score, trailing 2-0 heading into the second half.
Leopard senior Angel De Alba pushed the lead to 3-0 with a goal in the 49th minute. De Alba's goal came off a penalty kick after the Tigers received a yellow card in the box, this time by Oliver Field. La Verne's final goal was off a breakaway by Ulises Espinoza. The Leos would shutout Oxy in a 4-0 final.
Both teams came out aggressively, each receiving three yellow
cards and a total of 26 fouls. The Leopards out shot the
Tigers 29-17. La Verne goalie Jonathyn Lomeli
had nine saves in the win.
The Leopards were able to come away with two wins against the Tigers this year. The first game at Oxy ended in a 1-0 victory for the Leos in Eagle Rock.
With the win, La Verne improves to 4-6-1 overall and 4-4 in SCIAC, while Occidental is now 4-6-2 over and 4-2-2 in conference. The Leopards will continue conference play at home on Saturday with a game against Whittier College. The match will begin at 1:00pm.
