Leopards Defeat Sagehens in Overtime
Boye Christiansen's golden goal propelled the University of La Verne men's soccer team to a 1-0 overtime triumph over visiting Pomona-Pitzer in SCIAC action Wednesday night at Damien High School.
A scoreless first half included the Sagehens holding a 12-5 shot advantage on the Leopards. Both teams came out aggressively in the second half shooting 11 shots each. With the score tied 0-0 after regulation, the teams were forced into overtime.
It was just two and a half minutes into overtime when Christiansen broke the 0-0 deadlock with the game-winning goal to end the contest. From about 25 yards out, Christiansen shot into the top right corner off an assist by Peter Careaga for the score.
Leopard goalkeeper Richard Duran helped shutout the Sagehens, recording six saves in the victory.
With the win, La Verne avenged an earlier 2-0 defeat to the Sagehens during the first round of SCIAC play a month ago.
Coming off its 1-0 road victory over Whittier last Saturday, the Leos have won two straight contests for the first time all season.
La Verne continues its homestand Saturday night when they will take on the Tigers from Occidental College. The match will begin at 7:00 pm at Damien High School.
