Leos Drop WWPA Opener To Sagehens
A fierce fourth-quarter rally by the University of La Verne against Pomona-Pitzer fell short as the Sagehens held on to post a 13-12 win over the Leopards in first round action at the 2011 Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Men's Championship on the UC San Diego campus in La Jolla.
The Sagehens, who captured the SCIAC Championship in La Verne last weekend, jumped out to a 7-3 lead and then led 12-7 after Mark Hundall scored his fourth goal of the game with 6:03 to play in the game.
The teams traded goals and the Hens led 13-8 with 4:57 to play. La Verne then scored four straight, including a goal from Kyle Thorsness with 34 seconds remaining. Pomona-Pitzer would hold possession and escape with the win.
Thorsness along with Daniel Hargis tallied four goals apiece for the Leopards with teammate Tyler Hunt adding two.
La Verne continues action at the WWPA Tournament Friday as it takes on Whittier College in a 12:00 pm start.
