SCIAC Swim and Dive Championships Preview
The University of La Verne Swim and Dive team will be competing in the 2011-12 SCIAC Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by Pomona-Pitzer. The meet will be held this Sunday-Tuesday at the South Gate Pool, with preliminary rounds taking place on all three days beginning at 10 a.m., and championship rounds at night beginning at 5 p.m.
First-year head coach, Pat Skehan has already made impact on the program with over 23 swimmers recording their personal-best in every event heading into Championships. "I am excited for our team's performance at the SCIAC Swimming & Diving Championship," said Skehan. "They have worked very hard and come together as a team. We started in September, took on new challenges every day and now we should get a GREAT return on our investment."
Marc Okimura, Shane Hurter, John Jarvis, and Maddie Lovrensky, are the top seeded swimmers for the Leopards. Okimura will be competing in the 200-yard IM, the 200-yard breaststroke, as well as the 100-yard breaststroke where he holds the school record with a time of 57.79. Hurter's events will be the 100-yard and the 200-yard backstroke. Jarvis, La Verne's top distance swimmer, will be swimming in the 200-yard, 500-yard, and 1650-yard freestyle.
For the women, Lovrensky will be competing in the 50-yard freestyle, the 200-yard backstroke, and the 200-yard backstroke where she holds the school record with a time of 1:00.00.
"Marc, Maddie, Shane and John are all seeded in the top; but I know a whole lot of Leopards could find their way into the scoring heats. The very strong SCIAC conference will see the new Leopard attack," said Skehan.
