Leopards Drop Road Game to Athenas

La Verne failed to snap a two-game losing streak on Thursday night after a 63-56 conference loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Ducey Gymnasium.

The Athenas got out to a quick 10-point lead (15-5) in the first five minutes of the game. Chantal Crouzet brought La Verne back to within striking distance (19-14) after scoring 7 consecutive Leopard points. Crouzet led the Leopards in the first half with 10 points in just 10 minutes on the hardwood. La Verne was also a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line, but tallied 8 turnovers. The Leopards were able to score the last six points of the opening period and trailed 32-27 at the break.

CMS came out strong in the first five minutes of the second half to push the lead to 11 (41-30). La Verne battled back to within three points after a 10-2 run with 9:09 left in the contest. Cameron Hanson extended the lead to nine points (48-57) with a pair of free throws. La Verne made a late push with three minutes left to cut the lead back to 3 (57-54) with 1:23 remaining. However, solid free throw shooting by Aria Krumwiede sealed the game and the Athenas took a 63-56 decision.

Crouzet led the Leopards in scoring with 16, shooting 5-of-10 (50%) from long distance. Ashley Paul added 12, while forward Clarissa Holz tallied 6 points and 8 rebounds after 40 minutes on the court.  Athena guard Grace Beck led all scorers with 17, while Hanson contributed 13 points and pulled down 8 boards.

La Verne (8-8, 1-4 SCIAC) will look to earn their second conference win of the season with a home tilt against Occidental College (12-4, 4-1 SCIAC) this Saturday at Frantz Athletic Court. Tip off begins at 5 pm.
