Leopards Drop Road Game to Athenas
La Verne failed to snap a two-game losing streak on Thursday
night after a 63-56 conference loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at
Ducey Gymnasium.
The Athenas got out to a quick 10-point lead (15-5) in the first
five minutes of the game. Chantal Crouzet brought La Verne back to
within striking distance (19-14) after scoring 7 consecutive
Leopard points. Crouzet led the Leopards in the first half with 10
points in just 10 minutes on the hardwood. La Verne was also a
perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line, but tallied 8 turnovers.
The Leopards were able to score the last six points of the opening
period and trailed 32-27 at the break.
CMS came out strong in the first five minutes of the second half
to push the lead to 11 (41-30). La Verne battled back to within
three points after a 10-2 run with 9:09 left in the contest.
Cameron Hanson extended the lead to nine points (48-57) with a pair
of free throws. La Verne made a late push with three minutes left
to cut the lead back to 3 (57-54) with 1:23 remaining. However,
solid free throw shooting by Aria Krumwiede sealed the game and the
Athenas took a 63-56 decision.
Crouzet led the Leopards in scoring with 16, shooting 5-of-10
(50%) from long distance. Ashley Paul added 12, while forward
Clarissa Holz tallied 6 points and 8 rebounds after 40 minutes on
the court. Athena guard Grace Beck led all scorers with 17,
while Hanson contributed 13 points and pulled down 8 boards.
La Verne (8-8, 1-4 SCIAC) will look to earn their second
conference win of the season with a home tilt against Occidental
College (12-4, 4-1 SCIAC) this Saturday at Frantz Athletic Court.
Tip off begins at 5 pm.
