Leopards Get Road Win Over Sagehens
Coming off a heartbreaking 71-69 defeat to Redlands last Saturday, the University of La Verne returned to the hardwood Thursday night with a 70-57 victory over Pomona-Pitzer at Voelkel Gymnaesium in Claremont.
Senior guard Tedra Clark came off the bench to lift the Leopards
with a strong second half, totalling 20 points for the night with 6
three pointers and 50% (7-of-14) shooting from the field.
A poor shooting first half yeilded a offensive flurry in the
second, as both teams shot over 50% from the field after the break.
La Verne had more opportunities thanks to a 42-33 rebounding
advantage, which included 17 offensive boards.
The Leopards were also able to force 17 turnovers. While La Verne
suffered 12 turnovers, the squad combined for 21 assists.
Pomona-Pitzer kept themselves in the game at the free throw line,
converting 61.5% (8-of-13) at the charity stripe. However, La
Verne's backcourt combo of Clark and Ashley Paul shot 44.4%
(8-of-18) from beyond the arc to give the Leos a considerable
advantage.
Paul finished the game with 16 points while senior center Corinne
Watkins added 10 points while pulling down 9 rebounds. Clarissa
Holz led all players in rebounding with 11 boards, chipping in 8
points in 32 minutes of work.
Anja Hughes-Stinson led the Sagehens in scoring with 16. Center
Emily Van Gulik was the only other player on Pomona-Pitzer to break
double digits with 11 points. Van Gulik also added 7 rebounds
and two blocks.
La Verne is back to .500 on the season with a 10-10 overall record
and 3-6 conference mark. The Leopards will travel to Thousand Oaks
this weekend to take on the Regals from Cal Lutheran University.
Tip-off begins at 5 pm.
