La Verne Bests Visiting Beavers

The University of La Verne women's tennis team was able to come out on top in an 8-1 final against the Beavers from Caltech Saturday morning in La Verne.

La Verne's #1 Doubles team of Nicole Harden and Rebecca Rodriguez were able to defeat Lili Yang and Leslie Tong (8-1), while the #2 Doubles team of Megan Dean and Samantha Melero were able to take care of Cathy Dong and Sally Zhen (8-0). Claudia Chavez and Vanessa Vasquez were also able to win an 8-1 battle against Michelle Jiang and Wubing Ye, giving La Verne the first three points of the match.

Heading into singles, Harden and Rodriguez would tally two more points for the Leoards in their wins over Tong (6-0, 6-2) and Yang (6-1, 6-1) respectively, sealing the victory for La Verne. Dean would go on to beat Zhen (6-0, 6-0), and Melero and Vasquez would win their battles against Jiang (6-4, 6-3) and Dong (6-0, 6-2) respectively.

With the win, the Leopards earn their first victory of the 2009 season, and move to 1-3 in conference play. La Verne will continue action with a non-conference match, as they host Albion College Monday afternoon at the Claremont Club. The match will begin at 2:30pm.
