Leopards Split Matches Over Weekend
The University of La Verne women's tennis team kicked off their
season with a 9-0 victory over La Sierra on Friday afternoon.
However, the Leopards dropped a home match the following morning to
Cal Lutheran in a 7-2 decision.
La Sierra was only able to take 6 points in the entire match. Kyim
Mung put up a fight against Senior transfer Kelly Griffith, but
Griffith was able to defeat Mung 6-4, 6-0. All other Leopards were
able to shut out their opponents 6-0, 6-0.
La Verne struggled the following morning as they hosted their
first conference match against Cal Lutheran. #1 doubles team of
Griffith and Jessenia Garcia nearly knocked off Holly Beaman and
Jordan Leckness, but came up short in an 8-5 outcome.
Megan Dean and Jennifer Baca were able to use their experience on
the court to score La Verne's only points of the match, as Dean
beat Lauren Toohey 6-2, 6-1 and Baca defeated Melanie Anderson 6-3,
6-1. Lauren Meeks almost topped Lacey Gormley, lost 6-4, 6-4.
After the two matches, first year head coach Yolanda Duron is
optimistic about her young team early in the season. "The girls
were enthusiastic after playing well in Friday's win and although
we missed opportunities to capitalize against Cal Lu, the team will
learn from this experience and can only get stronger."
La Verne will continue conference play against the University of
Redlands next friday. The match will begin at 2 pm in Redlands.
