Leopards Topped By Sagehens, Tigers On Day 1 Of SCIAC Championships

The University of La Verne women's tennis team concluded Day 1 action of the SCIAC Championships with defeats to Pomona-Pitzer and Occidental Friday in Pasadena.

The Leopards, entering competition as the #7 seed, dropped a 7-0 decision to the #2 seed Sagehens in opening round action before falling to #6 seed Tigers in a tight 5-4 verdict in the second round.

Against the Tigers, La Verne took two of the three doubles matches as the tandem of Valerie Lezin and Allison Moncrief topped Oxy's duo of Jessica Go and Katherine Gould 8-4 at #2 while Carly Tucker and Justine Ledesma defeated Isabelle Ying and Julie Housman at #3.

In singles action, Occidental claimed four of six matches to prevail against the Leopards.  La Verne received victories at #5 and #6.  Lezin beat Rachel Wachstein at #5 with Monteilh earning a win over Housman, both in straight sets.  The swing match occurred at #4, where Oxy's Emily Wilde outlasted Tucker in a three-set battle.

La Verne concludes action against #8 seed and host Caltech in the seventh place match on the Caltech campus beginning at 10:00 am.
