Tennis Rolls To Victory Over Pacific Lutheran
The University of La Verne tennis team looked to return to the win column in non-conference action against the Lutes from Pacific Lutheran University. The Leopards were indeed victorious as they handled PLU by an 8-1 margin on Wednesday in Claremont.
The Leopards started off strong in doubles, winning at the 2 and 3 spots. At the #2 position, Valerie Lezin and Allison Moncrief defeated the Lutes" Hailey Rile and Amanda Peterson, 8-4. The Leos Carly Tucker and Justine Ledesma finished off doubles play by beating Caitlyn Hoerr and Saiyare Refaei at the #3 spot.
La Verne then carried its moment into singles, sweeping the Lutes in all six matches. Lila Luna beat Leah Newell in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. At the #2 spot, Tarika Krishnamurthy was forced into the third set but still was victorious over Tina Aarsvold 7-5, 4-6, 6-0. In the #3 singles matchup, Lezin prevailed in straight sets over Hoerr 7-5, 6-0.
Moncrief topped the Lutes' Refaei at #4 in a 6-2, 6-2 triumph. At the #5 position, Arielle Monteih defeated Deanna Ellmer in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Tucker defeated Rile 6-0, 7-5 to notch her second consecutive win in singles play.
"The girls played really and their hard work at practice has paid off," said Leopard head coach Yolanda Duron.
The Leos hope to continue their momentum as they return to SCIAC competition in the next outing to face Pomona-Pitzer at home on Friday at 2:00 pm.
