Women's Track Takes Flight At SCIAC Quad

The University of La Verne women's track and field team earned a split during competition at the SCIAC Quad meet at Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday.

The four-way meet consisted of La Verne along with Occidental, Pomona-Pitzer and Whittier, with La Verne competing against the Tigers and Sagehens.  The Leopards earned an 83-75 triumph over Pomona-Pitzer while falling 97-65 to Occidental.

On the track, Samantha Tucker won the 100 meters in a personal best time of 13.10.  Tucker also placed third in the 200 meters in 26.54. 

Clarissa Holz was a first-place finisher in the 400 meter hurdles, winning the event in a time of 1:07.62.

Both Holz and Tucker teamed with Kendall Kraiss and Kristine Leonard to win the 4 x 100 meter relay in 50.95.

Bernadette Smith highlighted the Leopard performances in field events by claiming the shot put, discus and hammer events.  Smith began by capturing the hammer with an effort of 145-8.  Later she took first place in the shot put with a winning toss of 35-7, and closed taking top honors in the discus with an effort of 117-4.

Kraiss earned a victory in the javelin with a toss of 121-6.  The win by Kraiss along with the three wins from Smith gave the Leopards a sweep of the four throwing events.

The Leopards will take part next weekend in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
