Tigers Prevail Over Leopards
The University of La Verne volleyball team had its moments but couldn't overtake Occidental College, which posted a 3-1 victory (25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19) over Leopards in SCIAC action Tuesday night at Frantz Athletic Court.
Though the Leopards held the Tigers to a .195 hitting percentage, the visitors won the crucial points to earn the win to improve to 17-8 overall and 9-3 in the SCIAC.
La Verne was held to a .139 hitting clip as the Tigers recorded 86 digs on the evening.
After dropping the opening set 25-21, La Verne led nearly the entire second frame, holding Occidental to a .093 percentage to win 25-21 and knot the match at a set apiece.
La Verne led midway through the third set before the Tigers surged to claim the lead and eventually win 25-21 to take a 2-1 advantage. La Verne led 17-13 in the fourth set only to watch Occidental reel off seven straight points to go up 20-17 on its way to closing the match on a 13-2 run to end the contest.
Occidental had three players reach double figures in kills led by Logan Boyer-Hayse who tallied 19 kills. Stephanie Gann and Kasey Rose added 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Madyson Cassidy collected 25 digs with Boyer-Hayse posting 22 digs.
Randi Taylor-Toomay tied for match-high honors in kills with 19 while Catie Logan finished the night with 11.
La Verne (15-11, 5-6) remains in fifth place in the conference standings, one game behind Whittier College (11-17, 6-5), which dropped a 3-1 decision to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps earlier this evening.
The Leopards continue action later this week as they host Pomona-Pitzer on Friday evening at Frantz Athletic Court. Match time is 7:30 pm.
