Volleyball Finishes 4-0 In Leopard Invitational
The University of La Verne volleyball team finished 4-0 in its own tournament as it wrapped up action with two sweeps to conclude action at the Leopard Invitational Saturday at Frantz Athletic Court.
La Verne topped UC Santa Cruz 25-19, 25-19, 25-21 in a key West Region matchup before dispatching of Principia 25-17, 25-21, 26-24, improving its season-high win streak to six consecutive matches.
The Leopards totaled 6 blocks and 60 digs in holding the Banana Slugs to a .025 hitting percentage. Randi Taylor-Toomay tallied 10 kills against UCSC with teammate Kendall Kraiss collecting 7 kills with 15 assists.
In its final match of the weekend, Taylor-Toomay recorded a double-double with a match-high 16 kills and 15 digs in propelling the Leos to a three-set win over Principia. Kraiss added 9 kills with Kayla Cribbs and Rachel Bailey posting 7 kills each. Krystal Castellanos dished out 37 assists for the Leos.
On Friday, La Verne earned a measure of revenge in topping Chapman in five sets (21-25, 25-18, 25-20, 23-25, 15-12) after falling at home to the Panthers on September 21. Four Leopard players totaled double-digit kills led by Taylor-Toomay with 17 followed by Kraiss (12), Logan (11) and Cribbs (11).
La Verne also topped Greensboro College on Friday, posting a 25-13, 25-15, 25-10 victory. The Leos held the Pride to a -.141 hitting percentage (15 K, 29 E, 99 TA). Taylor-Toomay paced La Verne on offense with 13 kills.
Taylor-Toomay was named the Leopard Invitational Tournament MVP while Kraiss and Cribbs were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Leopards, now 14-7 on the season, return to SCIAC action Tuesday on the road as it takes on Whittier in a 7:30 pm start.
