ULV Defeats Whittier In SCIAC Tournament

The University of La Verne women’s water polo squad claimed seventh place at the SCIAC Championships over the weekend in Thousand Oaks.

La Verne was seventh with two points awarded after going 1-2 in its three matches.

ULV’s lone victory arrived after a 10-9 effort over Whittier College Saturday evening in the Leopards' final outing. Senior utility Jen Aguilar recorded a game-high five goals to lead the Leopards, while both sophomore Mahina Reyes and senior Katie Watkins scored twice each.

After one period of play, the Leopards gained a 2-1 edge. The Poets bounced back, however, after outscoring the Leopards 3-2 in the second en route to knotting the match at four all by halftime. The Leopards held on to the win as they registered three scores in each of the remaining quarters while limiting the Poets to a single score in the third period.

In Saturday’s early action, the Leopards dropped a 13-5 decision to No. 5-seeded Redlands. Both senior Laura Larsen and Aguilar scored twice each for ULV. Reyes had one.

The Leopards trailed 6-4 at the half, but the Bulldogs pounded five goals in the third period to take a commanding 11-5 lead after three to secure the match.

Against Pomona-Pitzer in Friday's opener, La Verne suffered a 13-3 defeat. Larsen collected two goals and Aguilar produced one.

Hosted by top-seeded Cal Lutheran, the tournament saw Pomona-Pitzer repeat as champions from a year ago after defeating CLU in the first-place match.
