Leopards Take Part In CLU Spring Classic
The University of La Verne women's water polo team headed up to
Thousand Oaks last weekend to participate in the 2009 Cal Lutheran
University Spring Classic, where they would drop four games to
Fresno Pacific, Villanova, Santa Cruz, and Chapman University.
The Leopards started the tournament with an early game against
Fresno Pacific, and the Sunbirds would get out to an early 5-0 lead
at the end of the first quarter. The Leopards would cut the lead to
three at the half, and while Diane Aquayo would score two goals,
and Liz Roberts, Tiffany Martin, Catherine Tehuitzil, and Ashley
Forsberg would tally 6 goals collectively, it wasn't enough, as
Fresno Pacific would take the game in a 11-6 final. La Verne would
get out to another slow start against Villanova, but would cut the
deficit to 4 by the half. Roberts would add 2 goals, and Tehuitzil
would add another, but Villanova would walk away with a 9-3
win.
A pair of impressive freshman would come out firing Sunday morning
as they took on UC Satna Cruz, totaling their highest point total
of the tournament. Aquayo found the back of the net 4 times, while
Roberts would add 3 more goals in a losing effort, as a 17-7 final
would go to the Banana Slugs. Roberts and Aquayo would score La
Verne's only goals against its final opponent, Chapman University.
But it wouldn't be enough, as Chapman would win 11-2 to end the
weekend for the Leopards.
Aquayo and Roberts finished the tournament with 7 goals, and
Tehuitzil was the third leading scorer for La Verne with 2.
The Leopards will take on the Thunder from Wheaton College tomorrow
at the La Verne Aquatics Center. The match will begin at 4:00pm.
