Barese Earns First Team All-SCIAC Honors
Sophomore Katie Barrese earned First Team All-SCIAC honors after a ninth-place finish to help lead the University of La Verne women's cross country team at the SCIAC Championships on Saturday at Prado Park in Chino.
Barrese's placing is the fourth highest placing for a Leopard women's competitor at the SCIAC Championships after Monica Martinez's third-place effort and Leti Arroyo's fifth-place performance in 2001, along with Alexis Candelaria's fourth-place finish in 2005.
La Verne (148) placed sixth overall at the meet with a total team time of 2:05:19.64, an average of 25:03.93. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (47) placed first and was followed by Redlands (75), Whittier (89), Occidental (95), Pomona-Pitzer (123), La Verne, Cal Lutheran (180) and Caltech (187).
Coupled with the SCIAC Multi-Dual meet from two weeks ago, the Leopards place sixth in the overall conference standings.
Barrese was in the top pack of runners for the majority of her race. During the last 1/2 mile, she was in ninth and was able to hold her position during the final stages of the race. She completed the six-kilometer course in 24:06.63.
The trio of Yanet Urciaga, Micaela Castillo and Brigitte Blazys all closed their races well and executed solid teamwork for the Leopard squad. Urciaga finished 32nd (24:55.08) with Castillo placing 36th (25:01.56). Blazys placed 38th with a time of 25:15.41.
