Katie Barrese led the University of La Verne women's cross country team with a 17th place finish at the SCIAC Multi-Duals held Saturday at La Mirada Park in La Mirada.

Overall the Leopard squad placed seventh in the team standings with a 1-6 dual mark, topping Caltech (17-40) for its lone win of the competition.  Claremont-Mudd-Scripps placed first at the meet with a 7-0 mark.  Whittier (6-1) and Occidental (6-2) rounded out the top three squads in the team standings.

Barrese completed the six-kilometer course with a time of 23:20.65 to register a Top 20 individual finish.  Teammate Micaela Castillo narrowly missed the Top 30, finishing in 24:58.01 to place 31st overall.

The Leopards were also supported by Andrea Arceo, who placed 37th with a time of 24:26.92 while Sydney Rose completed her race in 25:16.64 to place 56th.

"It was a disappointing day due to sickness of Andrea Ramirez, which led to us being beaten by two teams that we otherwise should have beaten," said head coach Mike Atwood.  "Some notable performances are Micaela's 24:01 which is a 22 second improvement over last year, Sydney's 25:16, a 28 second improvement over last year.  La Mirada Park is a great course, as it's almost all grass, and there is no easy section--it's either uphill or downhill the whole way, and with an uphill finish, there's always some surprises in the final half mile."

La Verne will next be in action at the Fullerton Twilight Invitational on Friday, October 21 in a final tune-up before the SCIAC Championships, held October 29 at Prado Park in Chino.
