La Verne Celebrates 1995 NCAA Championship Squad

LA VERNE, CA — Earlier this season, the University of La Verne recognized one of its best teams in school history, the 1995 NCAA Division III Baseball National Champions.

Before the La Verne baseball team's final regular season home game of the season, members of the 1995 championship team were present for a pregame ceremony to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their title season.

Led by legendary head coach Owen Wright, the Leopards finished the year 39-9 and a perfect 21-0 in the SCIAC. In the NCAA Division III playoffs, La Verne defeated William Paterson, Marietta, and Methodist before rematching with Methodist in the championship game and winning 5-3.

The win claimed the Leopards' second national championship and first-ever NCAA Title. The 1995 squad set a new standard for La Verne baseball achievement and continued a legacy of Leopard excellence that carries on to today's squad.

Eddie Bustamante, Jeff Doen, Erik Larson, Francisco Quintana, Pat Murray, "Moose" Reyes, Brock Whobrey (father of current La Verne baseball player Aaron Whobrey), and honorary team member Amber T. were present for the event. Also in the stand celebrating were Pat and Lani Wright, wife and daughter, respectively, of the late, great Owen Wright.

The 2025 Leopards have a chance to reach the same heights as the 1995 squad. The Leopards open the NCAA Regionals on Friday with a 1:30 p.m. game against Whitworth.
