Men's Water Polo Starts IE Classic 2-0

LA VERNE, CA — Vasil Halchev led the Leopards with eight goals and the University of La Verne men's water polo team finished day one of the Inland Empire Classic a perfect 2-0.

The Leopards improve to 3-3 overall.

Game One: La Verne 15, Ottawa (AZ) 7

The Leopards took on the Spirit for the second weekend in a row and the result wasn't much different in the sequel. La Verne opened up to a 3-0 lead off back-to-back goals by Halchev and another by Charles Ortega on their way to the win.

Halchev led his squad with four goals and two steals. Ortega, Myles Storms, and Jason Soo Hoo each found the back of the net twice. Ortega added a steal.

Adam BarnuevoGuillermo OcasioDario MarianiDanilo Lugli, and Michael Staine each scored once. Ocasio led the Leopards with three assists.

Jonah Alvarado led the Leopards with seven saves and Mason Fox added two saves of his own.

Weston Restad led Ottawa with four goals.

After a close first quarter that ended with the Leopards leading 5-4, the Leopards went on a 6-1 run in the second quarter to roll away with the win.

Game Two: La Verne 16, Riverside Community College 8

Halchev scored another four goals and Barnuevo, Ocasio, and Ortega finished with two goals apiece in La Verne's second win of the day.

Joey Sabers totaled two assists and a goal. Ocasio had a big game defensively, leading all players with five steals.

Brandon PhamRex Sample, Mariani, Storms, and Soo Hoo each finished with one goal.

Fox tallied seven saves in the win. 

Kenny Wulf and Ethan Saenz both scored three goals for RCC.

The Leopards opened the game on a 5-1 run and never looked back.

Next Game

The Leopards conclude the Inland Empire Classic tomorrow with an 11:40 a.m. game against Fresno Pacific followed by a 3:40 p.m. game versus Concordia Irvine.
