THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Katherine Kibbe is doing it all.
The La Verne senior pitched complete game one-hitter, hit a grand slam and closed a game in relief to lead the University of La Verne softball to a sweep of Cal Lutheran on Friday at Hutton Field.
La Verne improves to 27-9 overall and 23-3 in the SCIAC. Cal Lutheran falls to 15-22 and 9-17.
With No. 8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (22-4 SCIAC) splitting with Chapman on the same day, La Verne takes sole possession of first place in the SCIAC standings and takes one step closer to its first SCIAC championship since 2004.
Kibbe gave up just a single hit without a walk and struck out six as Leopards won the first game, 8-0, in five innings.
The game was within range for Cal Lutheran heading into the fifth as La Verne led, 4-0, but Dutton's homer broke the game open and Melissia Garcia gave the Leopards the all-important eighth run with a bases-loaded walk.
The second game played out similarly. The Leopards held a 6-4 advantage heading into the fifth but broke the game wide open with a 7-run inning.
Kibbe capped off the huge inning with a grand slam and the Leopards won the second game, 13-4, also in five innings. Kibbe was also called upon to pitch in relief as the Regals were mounting a rally and picked up her second win of the day.
Kibbe gave up two unearned runs but fanned four in 2.2 innings. She moves to 17-4 on the year.
The Leopards stayed hot at the plate, going 15-for-29 while striking out just once. Dutton launched another three-run shot and six Leopards recorded multiple hits.
