DeAngelo homers twice in sweep over Cal Lutheran

LA VERNE, Calif. — Angelica DeAngelo left the yard twice, Sienna Kendricks and Michelle Deguzman each hit a homer of their own, and the La Verne softball team scored a pair of wins over the Cal Lutheran Regals Saturday afternoon.

Season Impact: With the wins, the Leopards extend their win streak to five games and improve to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in SCIAC play, holding on to their first place spot in the conference. Cal Lutheran falls to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

Game One: La Verne 7, Cal Lutheran 1

The Leopards jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead on their way to a win in the opening game of the day.

Katheryn Navarro gave La Verne the opening lead with a single to center that scored Shelby Tevis. That's when DeAngelo hit her first long ball of the day, hitting a two-run home run over the left field fence.

Two innings later, Kendricks hit a two-run shot to bring in Justice Borden, extending the Leopards' lead to 5-1.

Freshman Jiana Rojo got the start in the circle, pitching six innings, striking out three and walking just one in the win. Ashley Caro stepped in for one inning of relief.

Melissa Garcia added an RBI single in the fifth inning. Carly Condon, Kendricks, Borden, and Tevis each finished with a hit and a run scored.

Game Two: La Verne 8, Cal Lutheran 5

The Leopards rallied for a five-run third inning to take a 6-5 lead on their way to completing the sweep.

Trailing 5-3 in the third with Tevis and Deguzman on base, DeAngelo hit her second home run of the day to put La Verne up 6-0.

La Verne leads the SCIAC with 11 home runs this season.

Tevis helped set up DeAngelo's heroics when she got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in Rachel Ogata. With the base still juiced, Navarro hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Condon.

Deguzman gave the Leopards the opening lead of the day when she hit a solo home run to left center in the bottom of the first.

Caro picked up the win, pitching two innings of relief. Jiana Rojo picked up her first save of the season in two and two-thirds innings of work. Navarro got the start in the circle, striking out three.

Next Game: The Leopards head down Arrow Highway next Saturday, March 3 when they play the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens in a pair of games beginning at noon.
