Swim & Dive beats Caltech, falls to Pomona-Pitzer at tri-meet

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Both of the University of La Verne swimming and diving teams earned a split on Saturday in a tri-meet hosted by Pomona-Pitzer, beating Caltech while falling to the Sagehens.

Both the men and the women are now 2-1 in the SCIAC.

The Leopards were somewhat rusty coming off a three-week break from competition and tough training over winter break, but still turned in good swims.

"It is always difficult to swim fast after training so hard over Christmas but I think the women especially stepped up to the challenge," said La Verne head coach Pat Skehan.

The best swim of the day came from distance specialist Karla Fuertez. The junior claimed the women's 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11 minutes, 16.58 seconds, the second fastest event time in program history. Fuertez also got second place in the 500 freestyle (5:28.90), which was impressive given that it was after the 1000.

Maddie Lovrensky and Jacquelie Rojas were both double winners in the backstroke and the breaststroke events, respectively. Lovrensky cruised to a three-second win in the 100 backstroke and touched the wall first in the 200 backstroke at 2:09.99. Rojas won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.46 and took the 200 with a time of 2:33.35.

Krislyn Cha had top-three finished in the 100 butterfly (1:02.84, third) and the 200 individual medley (2:19.65, second).

Dual-sport athlete Kylie Cooke (volleyball) won the first diving event of her collegiate career on the three-meter board. She scored 170.05 points.

On the men's side, Scott MacKay won both boards and met the NCAA qualifying standard in each. MacKay scored a six-dive total of 250.95 points on the one-meter and recorded 275.10 points on the three-meter.

Mike Sanchez won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.24 and was the only swimmer to come in at under a minute. He also claimed the 200 breaststroke at 2:10.35, more than five seconds ahead of second-place finisher.

Jarrett Peterson notched a win in the 200 backstroke at 2:05.00 and was narrowly edged for second place in the 200 freestyle (1:50.30)

Men's final score

Pomona-Pitzer 186.5 - 100.5 La Verne

Women's final score
