REDLANDS, CA — Monica Garcia Silva finished with a team-high 17 points, four Leopards finished in double figures, and the University of La Verne women's basketball team surged in the third quarter to beat the Redlands Bulldogs 72-63.
The Leopards improve to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Bulldogs fall to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the SCIAC.
Garcia Silva went 7-13 from the field and nearly earned her second double-double of the year with eight rebounds.
Bailey Kurahashi scored 11 points including a pair of three-pointers. Brittany McDaniel had a huge defensive game off the bench. The junior notched a career-high seven blocks in the win to go with seven rebounds including six on the defensive end.
Alexa Withers added five rebounds and five points off the bench.
Redlands was led by was led by Cassandra Lacey's game-high 21 points.
How it Happened
The Leopards struggled from the field early shooting just 17.6 percent in the opening frame, falling behind 17-10 at the end of the first quarter.
La Verne started to heat up in the second quarter led by Steel's 4-6 shooting in the period. McDaniel put down five of her blocks to help make it a five point game at the break.
It was all La Verne in the third. The Leopards started the period on a 12-4 run, taking their first lead of the game on a Garcia Silva layup. After the Bulldogs briefly jumped back ahead, Johnson put the Leopards up for good with a three-pointer midway through the quarter.
The Leopards shot 55 percent in the quarter with Garcia Silva recording 10 of her points.
