Men's Water Polo Routs Caltech, 18-8

LA VERNE, CA — The Leopards jumped out to a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back as the University of La Verne men's water polo team defeated the visiting Caltech Beavers 18-8 Wednesday afternoon.

The Leopards were led by Jordan Baker's all-around performance. Baker was a menace defensively keeping the Caltech attack off rhythm as he finished with five steals. He also did his part on offense scoring four goals and adding three assists to go with three drawn exclusions.

"I think we had really nice performances from a lot of the guys. Our freshman Jordan Baker is as good as you can want. His stat line was unbelievable," said University of La Vern men's water polo head coach Pat Beemer.

Peter Trinh had an outstanding offensive game scoring a game-high seven goals just one shy of his season best.

"We rely on Peter for a lot of goals and we did that today, but even better was his percentage. He's shooting 50 percent which frankly is very good but he went 7-9 today which is off the charts good," said Beemer.

Leading 4-3 a minute into the second quarter the Leopards went on a 6-0 tear to take a commanding 10-3 lead. La Verne finished strong, closing the game on a 6-2 run.

Ryan Beery was solid at both ends of the pool, ending with two goals, two assists, and two steals. Nicolo Buono added three two goals, one assist, one steal, and one drawn exclusion.

Nering Sawyer totaled two steals, one goal, and one assist. David Gutierrez and Jaden Javier each found the back of the net once.

Eric Bates picked up seven saves in the cage.

The Leopards are on their best stretch of the season with four wins in their last six games. They'll look to build on their momentum when they travel to Claremont to challenge the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on Saturday at 11 a.m.
