LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne volleyball team took on Chapman University Friday night in the second game of their conference series. The Leopards swept Chapman 3-0 in the first match-up and duplicated the result in another 3-0 win.
Mya Ray led all players with 21 kills,
Lauren Gott added 11, and
Ayana Mier finished with eight.
The Leopards started slow initially, but eventually got the needed separation to win the first set 25-17. Chapman got off to a hot start but Ray came up big for the Leopards, twice tying the set. Chapman went on a 3-0 run before making critical errors to the Leopards' defense.
The Leopards carried the momentum into the second, winning 25-21 with kills from Mier and Gott, and a block from Mier and
Malia Capistrano closing the set. Coaston finished the game with a team-high three blocks and Capistrano finished with 40 assists.
La Verne got out in front early in the third set leading 12-7 and surged ahead after a block by freshman
Zacky Coaston and Capistrano started a 4-0 run to put La Verne up 20-12, on their way to a 25-17 win. The defense was led by
Madison Smith, who was honored in a pregame ceremony for surpassing 1,000th career digs in Tuesday's win over Caltech. She did not disappoint with 19 digs in the win. Smith's career dig total now moves to 1,024.
The Leopards will travel to Occidental College, on Saturday, October 21st at 6 P.M.
