LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne men's water polo team overcame an early first-quarter deficit to roll past Grossmont 19-12.
Peter Trinh continued his offensive dominance, leading all players with seven goals and adding four assists and two steals. Trinh got the Leopards on the board just under three minutes into the game and gave La Verne a 3-2 lead a couple of minutes later to put his squad up for good. Trinh leads the SCIAC with 59 goals and 74 points.
Jordan Baker played an outstanding all-around game, leading La Verne with five assists and posting a game-high six steals with four goals. His performance added to his SCIAC-leading 31 steals and moved him into the top five in the SCIAC in assists (19) and points (56).
Eric Bates was stellar in the game, recording 13 saves, just one shy of his season-best. Bates leads the SCIAC with 141 saves.
Nicolo Buono scored three times with one assist and one steal, and David Gutierrez also had a multi-goal performance with two goals.
Ryan Beery, Jaden Javier, and Nering Sawyer each scored once.
The Leopards move to 2-13 on the season, and Grossmont drops to 3-0.
