LEXINGTON, KY — Mya Ray and Malia Capistrano have been named American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III All-Americans the AVCA announced today.

Ray earned First Team All-American honors and Capistrano was tabbed an All-American Honorable Mention.

Ray earned First Team honors after being recognized as an honorable mention last season as a freshman. She ranks fifth in Division III with 5.31 points per set, sixth with 517 total kills and 4.79 kills per set, and seventh with 575.5 points. She is the first Leopard to earn First Team All-American honors since 2009. Ray was selected First Team All-Region and Named the SCIAC Offensive Athlete of the Year earlier this season.

Capistrano adds All-American Honorable Mention honors to her already impressive freshman resume. Capistrano was previously named First Team All-SCIAC, First Team All-Region, and Region 10 Freshman of the Year. She ranks 12th in the nation with 10.24 assists per set and ranks 14th with 1106 total assists.

"I think first and foremost I'm really proud of Mya and Malia for their performances this season. For Mya, being a First Team All-American means the AVCA thinks she is one of the top 14 players in the country at our level. That's a pretty incredible achievement. For Malia, to get our second Freshman Region of the Year award and to come in and run our offense at the level she did is really impressive. Both of them really exemplify the culture and hard work that our program is striving for and for them to be honored with these achievements honors all of us as a team," said University of La Verne volleyball head coach Jeff Hendershot.

The Leopards' 25 wins and trip to the Sweet 16 marked their best season since 2009.
