Leopards Sweep Southwestern

by Monica Garcia Silva

LA VERNE, Calif. - The University of La Verne's women's volleyball team had their season opener today against the Southwestern University Pirates. The Leopards are one of the three host sites for The Pacific Coast Classic.

La Verne roared into the game with an ace bringing full momentum to the Green and Orange. Feeding off the home court crowd, the Leopards took an early 13-6 lead. But the Pirates absolutely came to play forcing La Verne to call a timeout after a six point run. A few miscues between the Leopards allowed the Pirates to tie at 18-18. A smart key defensive play by Madison Smith allowed La Verne to gain confidence and two incredible kills by Noelani Soma sealed the set 25-22.

The second set saw both teams clawing for the lead. The Pirates struck first getting ahead 9-14. The Leopards worked some magic during a timeout, resulting in two forced errors by Southwestern. La Verne raced onward tying the score 18-18. Freshman Lauren Gott brought the set home with an incredible block and the two final kills of the set.

The final set displayed the Leopards' versatility and ability to finish strong. The Leopards persevered over a strong Southwestern team winning the game in a clean 3-0 sweep. Soma hit an impressive .478 off 23 attempts for the match. Mya Ray displayed her defensive skills and had two major blocks, igniting the defensive to win the game.

The Leopards will continue the Pacific Coast Classic playing tomorrow, Saturday September 2nd at 10:30 A.M and 5:30 P.M at the Tents.
