LA VERNE, Calif. - The University of La Verne Leopards lost a hard fought battle against Fresno Pacific University in the first game of the Inland Empire Classic Day 2.
The game was a back and forth shooting match that started from the first whistle. Periods 1 and 2 flipped in goals scored, tying the game going into halftime 5-5. The Leopards outscored the Sunbirds in Period 3, but Fresno Pacific fired off a goal with one second left that tied the game 13-13. 
Two overtime periods were not enough, and the teams forced sudden death overtime. Just over 30 seconds into the period the Sunbirds closed out the game with a shot that found the back of the cage to win the game 15-16.
Game notables included 4 goals a piece for 
David Gutierrez, 
Ryan Beery, and 
Peter Trinh; and 3 goals by 
Jordan Baker. Goalkeeper 
Eric Bates had 7 saves on the day.
The Leopards will next see action in their last game of the Classic against Long Beach State at 1pm.
