Leopards End Troyer with Win

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne men's water polo team ended the Gary Troyer Tournament with a 17-12 win over Connecticut College. 

The Leopards finished the tournament 3-1 with wins over UC Merced and Johns Hopkins, falling only to Air Force.

Jordan Baker, Nicolo Buono, and David Gutierrez scored four goals apiece. Baker played an outstanding all-around game, tallying six assists, two steals, and two drawn exclusions. Buono added two assists, three drawn exclusions, and one steal. Gutierrez led La Verne with four drawn exclusions and one steal.

After the opening eight minutes, the Leopards and Camels were tied 3-3. La Verne's offense got rolling in the second quarter and took a 9-7 lead into the half. 

The Leopards hit their stride in the third quarter taking a 13-8 lead off a goal from Buono.

Angel Pena got the start in the cage, grabbing eight saves to pick up the win. Eric Bates added four saves and one steal.

Air Force 18, La Verne 11

Baker and Alam Chang-Barnuevo netted first-quarter goals and the Leopards trailed the NCAA Division 1 Falcons 3-2 after the opening frame.

But La Verne couldn't overcome an 8-4 halftime deficit to pull off the upset.

Chang-Barnuevo led La Verne with four goals, two drawn exclusions, one steal, and one assist. Buono and Trinh each score twice. 

Gutierrez and Esteban Rivera both scored once.

La Verne returns to SCIAC play when they host Caltech on Wednesday, October 9 at 4 p.m.
