LA VERNE, CA — Mya Ray led the Leopards with 15 kills,
Lauren Gott added 11 kills and the No. 15 University of La Verne volleyball team recorded their third-straight sweep, beating the University of Redlands Bulldogs 3-0 Tuesday night.
The Leopards improve to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in the SCIAC. La Verne, currently in second place in the SCIAC next travels to rival No. 14 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps this Friday at 7 p.m. The Athenas enter the game 6-0 in conference play. It will be the Leopards' third-ranked opponent of the season.
Redlands falls to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in the SCIAC.
Ray tallied 11 digs, two blocks, and an ace on .367 hitting. Gott ended with seven digs and four blocks. Her 11 kills were just two shy of her season-high 13 kills in a three-set match.
Kaitlyn Bloomer added another stellar performance, hitting .455 with six kills and two blocks. Bloomer has hit above .300 four matches in a row and six of the last seven matches.
The Leopards rolled in the first two sets hitting .379 in the first set while holding Redlands to .057 hitting and limiting the Bulldogs to -.029 in the second set.
The Bulldogs put up a fight in the third and held a 19-16 lead late in the set. But the Leopards responded with a 4-1 run and a
Sydne Humphrey assist to Ray tied the set. It was all La Verne from there and the Leopards closed out on a 5-0 run to complete the sweep. Humphrey finished with 11 assists and three digs.
Zacky Coaston led the Leopards with six blocks to go with three kills.
Malia Capistrano paced La Verne with 13 assists, three aces, and a kill.
Allison Whiteman finished with five aces, five digs, and two kills.
Madison Smith added three aces, four digs, and two assists.
Kimi Watanabe-Mayhew posted four digs, two blocks and one kill.
Vanessa Marquez ended with five assists and a dig.
