Four Leopards Earn All-SCIAC Honors

LA VERNE, CA — Four members of the University of La Verne volleyball team have earned All-SCIAC honors the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced Wednesday.

Mya Ray and Zacky Coaston picked up SCIAC First Team accolades, and Allison Whiteman earned SCIAC Second Team Honors. Additionally, freshman Kimi Watanabe-Mayhew was tabbed the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year.

The award marks Ray's third straight first-team recognition. Ray ranks first in the SCIAC and 19th in the nation with 4.16 kills per set. In conference action, Ray has posted a staggering 4.51 kills per set. She leads the SCIAC in total kills (358) and kills in conference play (221). Ray also ranks in the top 10 in the SCIAC in aces in conference play (21) and total aces (39). Ray ranks 12 in the nation and leads the conference with 5.03 points per set (432.5 total points) and points in SCIAC action (261.5 points, 5.34 points per set).

Coaston earns All-SCIAC honors for the first time after a breakout sophomore season leading the La Verne defense. The four-time SCIAC Athlete of the Week ranks second in the country with 1.45 blocks per set and has helped the Leopards rank fifth as a team in the nation with 2.59 blocks per set. Coaston ranks fourth in the country with 129 total blocks. She ended the regular season with 118 kills.

Whiteman made a major impact in her first season with the Leopards. The Cal State San Bernardino transfer ranked in the top 10 in the SCIAC with 27 aces in conference play and 45 total aces. She ranked seventh with 3.24 points per set. Whiteman finished the regular season with 224 kills, 123 digs, and 47 blocks.

Watanabe-Mayhew showed the Leopards have a bright future in her stellar debut season. She finished the regular season with 119 kills, 48 digs, and 50 total blocks. In conference play, she averaged 1.58 kills, 1.06 digs, and 0.82 blocks per set in 11 starts before missing the final five matches of the regular season.

The No. 13 Leopards host the Whittier College Poets on Thursday, November 14 at 7 p.m. in the SCIAC Semifinals
