Leopards Advance to SCIAC Championship Game

LA VERNE, CA — The Leopards are heading to the SCIAC Championship game.

The No. 13 and tournament two-seed University of La Verne volleyball team swept three-seed Whittier College in the SCIAC Tournament Semifinals to advance.

Championship Information

The win sets up a showdown of last year's championship game. The Leopards will face No. 15 and tournament top-seed Claremont-Mudd-Scripss this Saturday, November 16 at 6 p.m. in Roberts Pavilion on the campus of Claremont McKenna College.

The Leopards and Athenas split their regular season matches. La Verne beat CMS in four sets in October inside Roberts Pavilion and the Athenas responded with a five-set win in The Tents on November 1. SCIAC Offensive Athlete of the Year Georgia McGovern and SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Year Dede Carranza will lead the Athenas in Saturday's title game.

Tickets are available in advance for $10 online (including fees) or $10 on-site. SCIAC students, faculty, and staff with institutional ID and children under 12 are free.

How It Happened

First Team All-SCIAC recipient Mya Ray posted a game-high 18 kills with 14 digs, two aces, and three blocks in the win. Fellow SCIAC first-teamer Zacky Coaston added seven blocks and five kills.

Neither team could take control early in the first set until the Leopards went on a 4-0 run late to take a 20-15 lead. After a Ray kill put La Verne's lead at 22-18, the Leopards benefited from three straight Whittier errors to claim the first set.

The Leopards dominated the second set, holding the Poets to -0.083 hitting compared to their 0.265. Leading 14-10, the Leopards went on a 9-1 run to take a commanding 23-12 advantage. A kill by Coaston and a clutch ace from Kiley McGarry put the Leopards up two sets.

The Poets responded in the third and jumped out to an early 11-8 advantage. La Verne closed the gap and took a three-point lead following a Madison Smith ace and kill from Lauren Gott. Whittier fought back and brought up set point when an attack error gave them a 24-23 lead. But La Verne answered. Mariah Ray slammed a kill to even the score and Gott added a kill to bring up match point. Mariah Ray finished it with another kill to send La Verne to the title match.

Gott finished with eight kills, four blocks, and one dig. Allison Whiteman added six kills and four digs.

Malia Capistrano dished 22 assists with seven digs. Sydne Humphrey totaled 14 assists, two aces, and eight digs. Mariah Ray tallied five kills and two blocks.

The Poets were led by Riley DeGroot's 11 kills and Mia D'Amato's five blocks.
