CLAREMONT, CA — The University of La Verne women's water polo team turned on the gas in the final quarter, but it was too little too late, falling to the Chapman Panthers, 9-7.
The Leopards, who entered the game ranked No. 3 in Division III, suffered their first conference loss of the season, moving to 4-8 overall and 3-1 in the SCIAC.
Reiley Burton led the Leopards with a season-high five goals, two drawn exclusions, and an assist. Kelly Jackson finished with 11 saves, the most for her in a game this year.
La Verne entered the final quarter down 7-2 and finally turned on the offensive pressure, scoring five times in the period. The Leopards benefitted from Chapman exclusions and penalties to edge close to the Panthers.
With under six minutes to play Sumi Rudisky drew an exclusion and took advantage of the power play with a shot to the back of the net. Maddie Grove kept La Verne rolling with another goal a minute later.
Burton gave La Verne all the momentum when she scored with 3:29 left to play to cut the deficit to 7-5.
But the Panthers quickly halted the Leopards' surge with back-to-back goals to take a comfortable four-goal lead with two and half minutes to play.
La Verne had a chance late with the help of two penalty calls that Burton easily converted. The Panthers were called for a third penalty with 19 seconds left, giving the Leopards a chance to get to within one. But Chapman's Georgina Burton saved Burton's shot, effectively sealing the Panthers' win.
