WWP Battle with First Place Sagehens

CLAREMONT, CA — The University of La Verne women's water polo team battled in a top-three SCIAC matchup but couldn't keep pace with first-place Pomona-Pitzer, falling 13-7.

Olivia Taylor posted one of her best offensive performances of the season, scoring four goals. Taylor has scored four or more goals five times this year.

Sumi Rudisky, Reiley Burton, and Brooklyn Young each scored once. Kelly Jackson grabbed 10 saves.

The Leopards stayed close with the Sagehens, ranked No. 1 in DIII and No. 23 across all divisions, during the first eight minutes. La Verne ended the defensive first quarter down just 2-1. Pomona-Pitzer started to break away in the second, outscoring La Verne 4-2 to take a 6-3 lead into the half.

Both squads capitalized on powerplay chances, each converting 4-7 attempts. The Leopards added a penalty goal in the fourth when Burton converted her attempt with just under four minutes remaining. 

Season Impact

La Verne moves to 6-7 overall and 5-2 in the SCIAC. The Leopards are currently in fourth place in the SCIAC.

Next Game

The Leopards have the weekend off and return to action in a key game against second-place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday, April 3, at 7 p.m. at Axelrood Aquatics Center.
