Game Recap: Women's Water Polo | | Anthony Avila

Burton Scores Sudden Death Game-Winner

CLAREMONT, CA — Reiley Burton needed just 15 seconds in sudden death overtime to launch the game-winning shot to give the University of La Verne women's water polo team a dramatic 9-8 SCIAC opening win in a rain storm Wednesday night.

Tied 8-8 after the first two overtime periods, the Poets and Leopards squared off for the sudden death final period. Brooklyn Young won the most important sprint of the night to give La Verne the difference-making possession.

Burton took the game into her hands and hurled a long shot that banked off the post and in for the win. Burton finished with three goals and an assist.

Young also added three goals and as teal in the win.

The Leopards took the 1-0 lead with under a minute in the first quarter when Reagan Barrera found the back of the net to end the defensive stalemate.

La Verne held on to the lead until Whittier's evened the game in the fourth quarter with 2:11 left to play, and then the Poets took their first lead with 52 seconds left to play.

The Leopards took advantage of a late Poets' exclusion when Maddie Grove delivered a pass to Sumi Rudisky, who came through with the equalizer with 25 seconds left in regulation.

Olivia Taylor scored a goal in overtime, but the Poets matched with 10 seconds left in the period to force sudden death.
