Bastidas Brothers Lead ULV Men's Soccer to Win in SCIAC Opener

LA VERNE, CA — It was a family affair Saturday afternoon at Ortmayer Stadium.

Brothers Anthony Bastidas and Alexander Bastidas each scored goals to lead the University of La Verne men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Cal Lutheran in their SCIAC opener.

"It was a very solid performance from the entire team. It felt like we were totally committed to the game plan. Our starters made some quality in-game decisions and our substitutions impacted the game by elevating our team play and energy," said University of La Verne men's soccer head coach Trevor Persson.  "It was a much-needed win to start SCIAC play. We scheduled tough preseason matches for a reason and our team showed up to compete."

The Leopards scored their first goal midway through the first half on a slick give-and-go. Daniel Govea stole possession away to set up the counterattack. Oscar Mendoza took control and sent a pass to sophomore midfielder Alexander Bastidas, the younger of the Bastidas duo. He drove down the field and sent a pass to Adan Villarreal on the left side of the box. Bastidas' defender took the bait and charged after Villareal who sent the pass back to Bastidas. The sophomore took a touch and sent a shot to the back of the net.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, older brother, junior defender Anthony Bastidas doubled La Verne's lead. Bastidas blocked a clear attempt from a Kingsmen defender, stayed with the ball, and knocked the ball in with a right-footed shot.

Following a tough 1-0 loss to UC Santa Cruz last time out, the Leopards came into this contest hungry and ready to start SCIAC play on the right note. The Leopards' defense had their best showing of the year, recording their first shutout. Hector Duenas-Peñas had an outstanding performance, gabbing five saves in the win.
