No. 9 Leopards Start SCIAC Play with Sweep

LA VERNE, CA — Mya Ray and Kaitlyn Bloomer led the No. 9 University of La Verne volleyball team to a triumphant 3-0 sweep over Caltech in their first SCIAC opening match.

Set Scores: 25-20, 25-10, 25-19

Bloomer led the Leopards with 10 kills and five blocks. 

Ray, who was honored in a pregame ceremony for surpassing 1,000 career kills at the Bear Invitational, finished with nine kills, seven digs, and three blocks. Ray's current total is at 1,055, placing her sixth overall on the Leopards' all-time kills list.

Sophomore Lauren Gott added 10 digs and eight kills. Senor Allison Whiteman finished with seven kills, two blocks, and eight digs. 

The Leopards pulled away in the first set with a 5-0 run to go up 24-18. Vanessa Marquez connected with Ray for the set-winning kill. Marquez led the Leopards with 27 assists to go with seven digs.

La Verne kept the momentum going and dominated the second set, hitting 0.414 and holding Caltech to -0.027 to take a 2-0 lead. 

The Leopards pulled away midway through the third to complete the sweep.

Malia Capistrano finished with 13 assists and five digs. 

Next Game

The Leopards will be back in action on Saturday, September 28th when they travel to Whittier College to battle the Poets at 6 p.m.
