Leopards Fall in Five-Set Battle to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in SCIAC Tournament Championship

LA VERNE, CA - In front of a packed house of fans inside The Tents, the nationally ranked No. 2 University of La Verne volleyball team battled to the very end of the SCIAC Tournament Championship on Saturday night-but fell just short in an intense five-set loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (25-16, 25-17, 21-25, 20-25, 14-16).

The Leopards came out blazing, storming through the first two sets with confidence, balance, and complete control. Behind sharp passing and fast offensive tempo, La Verne looked poised to clinch the conference crown, holding a commanding 2-0 lead as The Tents shook with energy.

But CMS clawed its way back into the match, tightening its defense and capitalizing on key Leopard errors. The momentum slowly shifted, and the Stags took the next two sets to force a decisive fifth. The final frame turned into a nerve-wracking exchange-12 ties, seven lead changes, and both teams battling for every inch. In the end, costly service errors proved critical, giving CMS just enough room to complete the comeback.

Despite the loss, Mya Ray delivered one of the best performances of her career, hammering 27 kills and adding 17 digs to keep La Verne alive point after point. The back row was outstanding all night, with Keilani Mumolo anchoring the defense with 22 digs, and Lauren Gott stepping up for a huge 19-dig effort of her own.

At the net, Zacky Coaston was a force once again-finishing with five block assists, a career milestone that now ties her for first all-time in La Verne history with 396 career blocks.

As a team, La Verne hit .209 and totaled 14 blocks, showing the toughness, energy, and resilience that carried them to a 25-2 record entering the night. But the service line told the story-too many missed opportunities that flipped late-set momentum in CMS's favor.

Now at 25-2 overall, the Leopards turn their attention to the NCAA selection announcement to see whether their remarkable season will continue into postseason play.
