LA VERNE, CA — The La Verne men's water polo team defeated Caltech on Saturday morning by a final of 20-10 as they honored seniors Jaden Javier and Nicholas Winsor.
The Leopards came out firing early, scoring five goals in the opening quarter to take command of the game. La Verne continued to push the pace in the second period, finding the back of the net three more times to hold an eight to five halftime advantage.
After the break, the Leopards broke the game wide open with a six-goal third quarter, to extend the lead into double digits. La Verne sealed the win with another six-goal surge in the final frame, showing no signs of slowing down as they cruised to the finish. The Leopards' relentless attack and depth proved too much to handle.
The Leos' offense saw many key contributors. Jordan Baker tallied season highs in goals and points, as he poured in six goals and added four assists to pace the attack. Josh Lamberton continued his hot streak in front of the cage with five goals, while Timothy Robles chipped in three goals and an assist.
William Roby-Unkovich added a goal and an assist, and Vaughn Friermuth helped facilitate the offense with two assists. Zachariah Barclay was also a key playmaker, scoring once and dishing out three assists as the Leopards' passing game carved up the Caltech defense.
The Leos' two seniors also got meaningful minutes. Jaden Javier recorded an assist and Nicholas Winsor had a goal and an assist of his own. Javier's career totals now sit at 29 goals and 26 assists. Winsor has accumulated 11 goals and 14 assists over his time at La Verne.
The Leopards will be back in action on Wednesday as they take on the Poets in Whittier in their second to last game of the season.
