Leopards Leave It All on the National Stage, Closing a Historic Championship Run

BLOOMINGTON, IL. - On the biggest stage in Division III volleyball, the University of La Verne Leopards battled through every point, every surge, and every momentum swing in front of a packed Shirk Center - including dozens of families, fellow student-athletes, alumni, and supporters who flew from California to witness history. Though the Leopards fell 17-25, 22-25, 21-25 to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in Saturday's NCAA Championship, the night cemented La Verne's legacy and spotlighted one of the greatest individual careers the program has ever seen.

This marked La Verne's fifth NCAA Championship appearance in program history and the program's first title match since 2008, a return to the national final that showcased the grit and resilience that carried the Leopards through a postseason filled with five-set battles and unforgettable moments.

From the opening whistle, the match took on the intensity of two elite teams meeting with everything on the line. UW-Oshkosh jumped ahead early with heavy swings and disciplined blocking, but La Verne continually pushed back, using long rallies and defensive grit to stay within striking distance. The second set saw the Leopards come alive with a renewed offensive rhythm, pulling within one possession multiple times before the Titans edged ahead in the closing points. The third set produced some of the best exchanges of the night, featuring 22 tie scores across the match, but Oshkosh's late-set execution made the difference in their 3-0 win.

Even in defeat, senior outside hitter Mya Ray once again rose to the moment, finishing with 16 kills on .282 hitting, adding nine digs and impacting the match on both sides of the ball. With her final swing in the national championship, Ray officially closed her career with 2,002 kills, shattering the previous La Verne all-time record of 1,495 and becoming the first Leopard ever to reach the 2,000-kill milestone. She also set the single-season kills record with 629 in 2025, cementing her place as one of the most dominant attackers in Division III history.

La Verne found offensive support from across the lineup as well. Mariah Ray stepped up with timely scoring and front-row presence, finishing with four kills, three block assists, a solo block and two digs. Zacky Coaston contributed key touches at the net and added two kills with three blocks, continuing to provide stability in the middle. Alanna Jones chipped in three kills and defensive coverage, while Abigail Montana posted two kills and four block assists in another strong postseason showing.

Setter America Reynaga steered the offense with 11 assists and 12 digs, keeping the Leopards connected during long rallies and pressure moments. Libero Keilani Mumolo anchored the back row with 13 digs, battling against one of the most balanced offenses in the country.

Despite the final result, the Leopards walked off the court surrounded by the roar of supporters who traveled across the country to stand behind them - a fitting backdrop for a team that rebuilt itself into a national finalist and restored La Verne volleyball to the championship stage.

The 2025 season closes with a 30-3 record, a regional championship, a national finals appearance, and a historic individual legacy etched forever into the Leopard record books. A season defined by heart, growth, and unforgettable performances - and one that will be remembered at La Verne for years to come.
