Leopards Can't Topple Top-Ranked Sagehens

CLAREMONT, CA — The University of La Verne women's water polo team fell on the road, 21-10, to the top ranked team in Division III, Pomona-Pitzer.

Briana Zapata and Brooklyn Young each scored three goals. Zapata added two assists while Young dished one assist and had two steals.

Olivia Taylor found the back of the net twice and drew a team-high three exclusions. Gigi Gomez and Dottie Barrera both scored once. Kelly Jackson finished with eight saves, and Miranda Graham scored six. 

The Sagehens jumped out to a 6-1 first quarter lead, went up 15-3 at the half and the Leopards couldn't recover.

The Leopards dropped their first conference game and fell to 1-1 in the SCIAC and 2-11 overall. The Sagehens improve to 8-7 overall and 3-0 in SCIAC play.

Next Game

La Verne returns to Las Flores park this Saturday, March 15 at 11 a.m. for an anticipated matchup against Whittier College. The Leopards will play their Alumni Game immediately following their action with the Poets.
