La Verne Women’s Water Polo Closes Competitive Convergence Tournament

LA VERNE, CA — Reiley Burton scored 11 goals, Maddie Grove and Nancy Trinh netted six, and Brooklyn Young added five as the University of La Verne women's water polo team closed the annual Convergence Tournament. 

The Leopards played four games, facing Division 1 La Salle, Division II Azusa Pacific and Fresno Pacific, and Division III Augustana College.

Burton scored on over 52% of her shot attempts in the tournament and totaled four blocks, three drawn exclusions, two steals, and two assists. Freshman goalie Miranda Graham finished with 45 saves and 18 steals. Trinh led the Leopards with seven drawn exclusions.

Young led the Leopards with five assists and added two steals. Brianna Zapata tallied six drawn exclusions, three assists, two goals, and five steals. Kelly Long, fresh off participating in the SCIAC Swim and Dive Championships, posted four assists and a goal.

Gigi Gomez finished with four assists, two drawn exclusions, and two steals. Maya De Guzman ended with four steals, one goal, and one assist. Olivia Taylor drew six exclusions and scored once. Dottie Barrera added one goal, assist, and steal.

Madison Coss blocked as shot and had one assist. Porsche Double finished one with one drawn exclusion and steal, and Payge Miller drew two exclusions.

La Salle 21 La Verne 8

The Leopards battled with the Explorers early and trailed 4-3 with under a minute left in the first quarter but La Salle scored two quick goals to end the period and shut out the Leopards in the second to pull away.

Augustana 9, La Verne 8

The two squads played tight in the final game of day one and the Leopards held an 8-5 lead entering the fourth. The Vikings pulled off the comeback and ended the game on a 4-0 run to spoil La Verne's day.

Fresno Pacific 16, La Verne 9

The Leopards and Sun Birds faced off for the second time in a week and a half after playing at the FPU Mini Tournament. La Verne looked much improved the second time around, kept pace with FPU through the first half, and headed into the break down just 7-4. The Leopards added five more goals in the second half but couldn't close the gap.

Azusa Pacific 20, La Verne 9

La Verne fell down an 8-0 hole to the Cougars but responded with a 4-3 run to close the first half but couldn't pull even

Next Game

The Leopards open up SCIAC play against Caltech on Wednesday, March 5 at 4 p.m. at Las Flores Park.
