Men's Soccer Defeats Sagehens 2-0, Moves Into 2nd Place

CLAREMONT, CA — The University of La Verne men's soccer team took a 1-0 lead in the first half and added an insurance goal midway through the second to beat the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens 2-0 Wednesday night.

Postseason Push

The Leopards improve to 6-4-4 overall and 4-2-2 in SCIAC play. With the win, La Verne moves into a three-way tie for second place in the conference with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Chapman. La Verne faces the Chapman Panthers on October 24. The top five teams advance to the SCIAC Tournament.

How It Happened

In the 32nd minute, the Leopards jumped out to a 1-0 lead off a Kevin Arreola strike. Arreola fended off two defenders, including a slide tackle, and struck the ball from just outside the box past Pomona-Pitzer's keeper. Alexander Bastidas earned his third assist of the season while Arreola picked up his first goal of 2026.

The second half brought similar success for La Verne. In the 64th minute, Joel Trejo found the back of the net to put the Leopards up two. Trejo, who seemingly only scores highlight-reel goals, added another make from range, this time off a free kick just outside the box. Trejo scored his fourth goal of the season in just six games played.

Following the Leopards' second score, each team picked up two yellow cards in a physical match that featured 23 fouls.

Next Game
