LA VERNE, CA – The University of La Verne volleyball team defeated the Caltech Beavers in a clean 3-0 sweep on Thursday.
Freshman rightside
Emma Read recorded a career-high game, hitting a .700, with seven kills and digging two. Senior
Emma Yogan put in work, earning the most kills on the team with 11, hitting a .296 and digging four. Junior
Camryn Muuss earned nine digs, following
Malia Capistrano with ten, and
Morgan Watkins with fourteen.
Set one was neck and neck; the teams traded errors until senior
Emma Yogan took action. Yogan swung big, earning five of her total eleven kills in the first set to lead La Verne to a 25-20 set win. The Snohomish, Washington native has put in work to earn her spot on the outside. She finished with a season-high 14 points against Caltech.
Caltech attempted to use their momentum in set two, but
Morgan Watkins' five point serving run shut that down. Watkins' service aces, combined with errors from the Beavers, accelerated the Leopards to a 9-3 lead. La Verne did not allow an inch the rest of the game, with senior
Abigail Montana scoring three of her total five kills, hitting a .625, with two block assists. Set two finished rapidly, 25-15.
La Verne concocted some lineup changes in the third, sending in Read on the right side. Read and Yogan, referred to as "The Emmas" by their squad, traded kills back and forth until the score read 14-2.
Jordyn McCoy set her teammates up for success, finishing with ten assists. Capistrano nabbed 16, and both setters had a kill each. The Beavers attempted a comeback, but were met with defeat when
Mariah Ray swung back, closing the game out 24-16.
The Leopards are back in action October 16 at 2 p.m. on the road facing the University of Redlands Bulldogs.
