LA VERNE, CA – The University of La Verne volleyball team fell to the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas in four after an impressive first set, led by senior captain
Lauren Gott.
Gott has started all four years at La Verne, and helped lead her team to the national stage last year. When asked at the start of this season what her personal goal was, she chuckled and replied, "I'd like to be All-American again." Players like Gott push their teammates to succeed.
She did just that against CMS, earning the team 16.5 points, with twenty digs, sixteen kills, and a .211 hitting percentage. The Leopards ran up the score in the first set. Right sides
Mariah Ray and
Alanna Jones set a standard early. Ray swung lethally, earning four kills, and finished the night with six, while Alanna tallied four of her eight total in set one. The pair finished the night with a combined eight block assists. Libero
Morgan Watkins dug fifteen and earned seven assists, following
Jordyn McCoy's fourteen, and
Malia Capistrano's thirteen. La Verne finished on top in set one, 25-15.
The Athenas struck back in the following sets and took the match.
The Leopards are back in action October 6 at 7 p.m. facing the Pomona Pitzer Sagehens at The Tents.
